Child Bereavement

Wigan and Leigh Hospice education team are pleased to be able to offer support to all levels of teaching and support staff by providing a theoretical overview of the key principles of loss, grief and bereavement. They state they are not bereavement counsellors, but have significant experience within a palliative care environment where supporting young people is commonplace.

Did you know that up to 7% of children experience the death of a parent by the age of 16?

Evidence suggests that grief can manifest itself in regressive, disruptive behaviour, particularly in educational settings.

Within a school environment it is likely that staff will encounter pupils dealing with loss or other traumatic events. An awareness of the fundamental principles of loss grief and bereavement can assist in the effective management of such situations and ensure the optimum care of the children involved.
